Artifacts: Pictures from Aunt Judy

My Aunt Judy sent me some old pictures in a card for my birthday.  I thought I'd share them here.

Here's my mom playing the piano.  Look at that phone in the background.

Here's grandma and grandpa and their daughters standing in front of their storm cellar.

The family cars and the dog on the right.

Mom and Aunt Judy with their brother's new car.

Christmas 1957.  There's that phone again.  Aunt Judy's note on the back says, "I think it looks like Pat got more than I did.  Ha."

Grandpa would go out and cut down a Christmas tree out in the woods.

Front porch of their old house.  "Loved swinging and watching for boyfriends to drive by."
Another shot with the cellar in the background.  "Pat was first one in the cellar.  Daddy would disconnect the telephone line and he and our dog would come last."

Baseball Journal July 27-28, 2018

7-27-18

Oh, this was a problem.  My two games of the night came on at the same time and I wanted to experience them both.  On the MLB.TV free game, we had the Cubs and Cardinals in St. Louis.  On the radio, the Chihuahuas were playing the OKC Dodgers in Oklahoma City.  Having to choose, I started off with the TV coverage.  As you might expect, there was a huge crowd there at Busch Stadium for the game.  There was plenty to talk about in the pregame.  The Cubs just got Cole Hamels.  The Cardinals just completely upended their bullpen.

When I had to leave my desk, I changed over to the radio game.  It sounded like a big crowd in OKC too.  Tim Hagerty chatted about yesterdays rainout in Colorado Springs spoiling the El Paso Cup for the year (and forever, since that was probably the Chihuahuas last game against the Skysox with the franchise leaving for San Antonio).  Both teams, by odd coincidence, play their home games in El Paso County (Texas and Colorado).  Theyd even made up a trophy.  Oh, well.

This is unlike Brett Kennedy, said Tim during the first inning as he gave up two runs on three hits to start the game.  With the Dodgers up 2-0, the game sped along without further scoring for a few innings.  I noticed that former Chihuahua, Rocky Gale, was now the Dodgers catcher.  I got back to my desk and put the Cardinals game back on and put the Chihuahuas up on Gameday.

The Cardinal announcers chatted with former player, John Stuper, in their booth.  Hes currently the coach for Yale baseball.  Hey, Ive seen this guy and his team here in Las Cruces (3-5-17).  Their fans travel well and were really nice people.  Stuper was really proud that hed been able to place a couple of players in the Major Leagues.  Are all your players smarter than you? an announcer asked, since they are Ivy League students.  No, because I make out the lineup card, Stuper answered.  Cant argue with that reasoning if youre a player.

Anthony Rizzo homered in the third to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead.  Somewhat upsettingly, I noticed that the broadcast inserted an ad during a mound visit.  Im getting a queasy feeling.  In the bottom, Jason Heyward dropped a fly ball by Paul DeJong that bounced off the wall.  Heyward caught it before it hit the ground, but it was still a live ball.  Yadier Molina chugged all the way from second to slide in under the tag at home.  The Cards then took the lead on an RBI single, 2-1 Cardinals.

I was away from my desk again and went back to listening to the Chihuahuas.  In the sixth, the pups loaded the bases with one out.  A new pitcher came in for the Dodgers. He walked in a run with two outs and a full count on Shane Peterson, though a fan did make a great jump catch in the stands of a foul ball.  The crowd was really into it as Diego Goris came up.  He hit a high fly ball.  The outfielder never saw it and started waving for help.  It wasnt going to matter.  The ball flew well over the fence for a grand slam.  Tim went crazy doing the call.

The inning wasnt even over.  The crowd suddenly started cheering.  There was cat running around loose on the field.  Tim explained that sometimes teams were okay with feral cats around the stadium, since they helped to control the rodent population.  Presumably all the staff there had all seen videos of unfortunate people who had tried to pick up cats in situations like this.  Thus, they tried to open gates to get the cat to leave on its own.  After about five minutes, he eventually jumped into the stands and disappeared.  The crowd roared.

Amazingly, this wasnt the Chihuahuas first cat delay.  One happened during the Chihuahuas very first game.  (I was listening to that game, but wasnt blogging baseball at the time.  I dont remember this incident either, so I must have been away from the broadcast when it happened.)  This isnt even the first time there was an animal delay that disrupted a Chihuahuas/Dodgers game.  That happened in El Paso when a Wiener Dog race went awry between innings.  (I dont have a blog entry for that either, but I remember there was a viral video about it.)

Everything else seemed anti-climactic after that.  Back in St. Louis, Yadi and DeJong drove in a couple more runs to make it 5-1.  In the sixth, Javier Baez homered, but the Cardinals won 5-2.  As fast as the Chihuahuas game was going before that sixth inning happened, I cant believe that the Cardinals game probably finished 15 minutes before the Chihuahuas.

In OKC in the seventh, Forrestt Allday drove in a run on a sacrifice.  In the eighth, Francisco Mejia drove in a run.  Finally in the ninth, Peterson drove in Allen Craig to make it an 8-2 Chihuahuas final.  Brett Kennedy had a rough first, but did well after and got the win to go to 10-0.  It was a good night of baseball.  You never know what youre going to get in baseball, even a grand slam and a cat delay in one inning.

7-28-18

Its Saturday morning and its time for MLB on Mexican TV.  Im really pretty grateful for this, since FOX wasnt showing a game tonight.  However, its the Yankees for the second week in a row, this time playing the Royals.  Both teams were in the news last night for bad reasons.  Aaron Judge was going to be out for a few weeks with a broken hand, and the Royals dealt off Mike Moustakas to the BrewersMoose will be reunited there with Lorenzo Cain.  If the Brew-crew makes it into the postseason, theyll be bringing some good playoff experience with them.  In any case, the Yankees are playing at home with a .600-something record and the Royals are selling off, so this wasnt a good-looking matchup on paper.  But, you never know what kind of game youre going to get on the field.

In the second, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out.  Yankee catcher Austin Romine (an upgrade over Gary Sanchez, in my opinion) got to first to fill them when he got hit on the arm by a pitch.  He was okay, but probably bruised.  The ball ricocheted and hit Salvador Perez on the helmet and he was shaking his head afterward.  His thinking was not impaired though.  The next batter hit what he thought was a foul in front of the plate.  Salvy jumped on it while it was fair, stepped around the batter to touch home and then tagged the batter.  It was a double play and nobody scored for the inning.

That play alone was worth me watching, but it got better.  Rosell Herrera drove in two in the third to put the Royals up 2-0.  I wish I could understand the Mexican announcers better.  Im catching words if I concentrate.  They seemed to really be having a good time calling this game with a lot of laughing.  Their coverage also shows highlights from some of last nights games and they show some fan submitted baseball Twitter pictures.

Salvador came up big again in the fifth by driving in two runs to make it 4-0.  Lucas Duda came up next and hit a hit a high pop up to right field for a deep out . . . in most any other ballpark.  In Yankee Stadium, though, its a home run.  The Royals were now up 6-0.

But in the bottom, Giancarlo Stanton came up with a runner on.  I noticed he was back to wearing his faceguard.  He absolutely blasted one a straightaway center into the second deck, 6-2.  Royals starter Brad Teller was showing signs of fatigue at that point.  In the sixth, he came out after giving up two runs with two on and two outs.  The reliever walked the bases full for Stanton, who hit a high liner the other way to right field.  Jorge Bonifacio made a running catch to save three runs.  It was now 6-4 though.

While flipping channels between innings, I saw a bit of a West Coast Conference news show.  They showed one of their member schools baseball teams wearing, I kid you not, an Astros throwback jersey.  I have to remember to do some research on this later and find out which team that was.  Update: It's the Pepperdine Waves.  Check it out.

Back to game, Gleyber Torres drove in Didi Gregorious to make it 6-5.  The Royals almost let in the tying run on a wild pitch, third strike on the third out.  Perez was able to throw out the batter at first to end the inning.  David Robertson came on in the eighth to lock it down for the seemingly inevitable Yankee comeback.  He let two runners on and then Brian Goodwin hit a three-run homer to right field.  This one went into the second deck and would have gone out at any stadium.  Well, that was unexpected.  9-5 Royals.

In the bottom, the Royals announcers, who I could just barely hear under the Mexican announcers, talked about the new George Steinbrenner mural on a back wall behind the outfield.  They were very complimentary in talking about him.  (Meanwhile, the Yankees broadcasters were likely wondering if the Royals might accept a couple of minor leaguers for Salavador Perez.)  Duda sacrificed in a run in the ninth to make it 10-5 Royals, which was the final.  Okay, if the Yankees keep playing entertaining games, I may start looking forward to watching them more.

The Mexican TV coverage showed highlights from the Rangers pounding the Astros last night.  Tonight, they continued the series in front of a sellout crowd in Houston.  It was Justin Verlander versus some guy Ive never heard of, Ariel Jurado, which Ive found myself saying all season about the Rangers roster.

The scoring started in the second with an Isiah Kiner-Falefa solo home run, though Verlander did strikeout out the side.  In the fourth, the Rangers loaded the bases when two infielders collided on a grounder, but no runs scored.  George Springer tied it in the bottom with a solo homer.  In the fifth was the play of the game, as Roughned Odor hit an inside-the-park home run with a head-first slide into the plate.  Springer hit the wall hard trying to get it.  Eric Nadel did a great call of the play.  2-1 Rangers.

That was Verlanders last inning.  Jurado went six in his second MLB start.  Who would have figured this game to be a pitchers duel?  Ruggie added to the lead with a solo homer in the seventh, 3-1.  The Chihuahuas had already started their game, but I kept with this game as I unexpectedly still had decent reception late in the evening on my local affiliate.

In the ninth, the Rangers blew it open.  Ruggie got his fifth hit of the night and was driven in.  Then Joey Gallo delivered the hammer with a monster three-run shot to make it 7-1.  Alex Bregman would get a two-run homer off of Austin Bibens-Dierkx in the bottom.  There was a ball that hit the roof that would have been an out, but was ground-ruled dead.  Finally, a double play ended the game.  7-3 Rangers final.  I cant believe I was able to listen to the whole game.  It was a pretty quick at two hours, 44 minutes, which helped.  I still like the Astros, but it was good to see the Rangers playing with some pride in their rivalry series.

In Oklahoma City, the Chihuahuas were playing the OKC Dodgers.  In the pregame, Tim Hagerty mentioned that the Cat delay video from yesterday went viral in the national sports news.  I flipped over occasionally.  By the fifth, OKC had a 1-0 lead.  I tuned back in for good at just the right time, as Forrestt Allday tied the game in the seventh off of Pat Venditte.  Yes, youve heard that name before.  Its the switch pitcher.  Im sure Tim talked about him at length, but I missed it.  He did mention that Venditte was throwing to first to warm up his other arm.

In the eighth, Francisco Mejia doubled and was moved to third, but was left stranded.  In the ninth, Dusty Coleman decided hed end it with a 400 blast to centerfield.  Tim did great dramatic call of the homer.  Trey Wingenter closed it out for a very tight 2-1 Chihuahuas win.

I pressed my luck on reception and tried to get the Rockies game.  Seunghwan Oh, the Final Buddha (still an awesome nickname), made his Rockies debut.  I think he did okay; I couldnt really hear and eventually I gave up.  Its been a good, full day of baseball anyway.

Baseball Journal July 23-26, 2018

7-23-18

The Chihuahuas had the night off, but the MLB.TV free game was a good matchup, the Dodgers versus the Phillies.  This is a pair of first place teams in tight divisions going at it.  It was an overcast, rainy evening in Philadelphia, but as well see, the air was not heavy at all.

In the first, Max Muncy and Yasmani Grandal went back-to-back with solo home runs for a 2-0 Dodger lead.  That was a good benchmark for the rest of the night.  In the second, Chris Taylor homered to make it 3-0.  In the bottom, Maikel Franco solo homered to make it 3-1.  These recaps are going to get real easy to write if all Im doing is noting home runs.

Also in the second, Chase Utley came up to bat for the Dodgers.  Before the game, hed held a press conference and announced that he was retiring this year (or maybe this happened earlier, Im not sure).  This would be his last, at least regular season, appearance in Philadelphia.  As a great former Philly player, he got a standing ovation from the crowd and the PA even played his walkup music.  He tipped his helmet to the crowd.  Chase flied out, but even got a cheer going back to the dugout.  During the press conference, he was asked if hed recommend playing in Philly, a clear reference to the fans reputations there.  He thought it got pretty muggy in the summer, but otherwise he had good things to say about it and the fans.

In the third, after loading the bases with two outs, Philly starter Zach Eflin got a quick hook.  That inning finished without scoring, but next inning, Dodger Joc Pederson hit yet another solo homer to make it 4-1.  I admit that the Philly announcers werent doing it for me, but they made a good point in the bottom.  Franco shortened up his swing with two strikes and got a hit, prompting a discussion, Why cant everyone do that!

Away from my desk, I listened to some more Flying Squirrels baseball.  I honestly could never figure out who they were playing, but they lost to them.  Ryan Howard was mentioned to be on the team.  What? I puzzled, until I looked him up and found out it was new player, not the great Phillies player.  Howard, the veteran, did show up last year in El Paso playing against the Chihuahuas (8-16-17).

The announcer there was excited about a Cardinals game in progress.  Daniel Poncedeleon was making his Major League debut and had a no-hitter going through seven innings.  Weve met him before playing the Chihuahuas (6-16-18) and at the Triple-A All-Star Game (7-11-18).  Unfortunately, hed thrown well over 100 pitches by that point and came out of the game.  Even more unfortunately, the Cardinals ended up losing the game.

Id went back to my desk for a minute and noticed Rhys Hoskins was at bat with two runners in scoring position.  I had to stick around and watch.  After a pretty good battle, Rhys pounded a hanging curveball for a three-run homer, which tied the score.  I let out a cheer at that point.  Odubel Herrera then came up and hit a solo home run to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead.  A Philly relief pitcher caught the ball in the bullpen.  Dodger starter Ross Stripling came out at that point, no doubt having flashbacks of the All-Star Game (7-17-18).

In the seventh, while I was out of the room, Muncy hit a sacrifice that tied the score.  Did somebody finally figure out how to score a run without a homer?  Will other teams copy this innovative strategy?  More bad news, Tim Tebow was probably out for the rest of the season with a broken hand.  Im sorry to hear this.  Yeah, they gave out Double-A player news in an MLB game.  Sean Hannity even talked about it the next day on his show, saying Tebow had drawn in thousands to watch him play.  I guess he is a big deal.

By the eighth, the overcast skies finally opened up.  There was heavy, but brief rainfall.  The game wasnt delayed for it.  In the ninth, I was distracted by a beautiful woman, who suddenly showed up behind home plate.  She was having a good time and was really into the game.  Seranthony Dominguez, love that name, came in, but seemed rusty from a lack of use.  He loaded the bases with one out and let in a run on a passed ball that was ruled a wild pitch.  After reloading the bases, Seranthony was out.  The beautiful woman left too.  This was all bad.

A single brought in another run to make it 7-5.  A double play ended the inning, as Muncy got caught in a rundown trying to take home on a grounder.  In the bottom, Franco again hit a solo homer.  A Philly fan holding a baby caught the ball in the stands.  After that, Kenly Jansen shut the door and 7-5 Dodgers was the final.  This game reminded me a lot of the All-Star Game in the way the scoring went, but it felt like a big game, and I enjoyed it, even if I was disappointed by the result.  So, in honor of Philadelphia fans, BOOO!

7-24-18

The MLB.TV free game was the Indians versus the Pirates.  I watched the Indians pregame show where they mostly talked about the Yankees.  Last night, catcher Gary Sanchez didnt run out a ground ball in the ninth which ended up ending the game.  Sports talk commentators were letting him have it, until it was revealed that he had been injured earlier in the game.  Now the Yankees desperately need a catcher, since Sanchez wasnt that great before the injury.  The Indians commentators were overflowing with sympathy for the Yankees plight.  Later in the evening, news broke that the Yankees had acquired Orioles closer Zach Britton.  Nothing like a little impulse shopping to make yourself feel better when youre blue.

The Pirates were coming into the game riding a 10-game winning streak, and theyd won last night against the Indians and Corey Kluber.  This streak has still left them barely over .500 and seven games back in their division.  It was a good-looking crowd there in the Cleveland, well the women in the crowd at least.  Shane Bieber, Bieber Fever, was pitching.  He didnt start off well, giving up a two-run homer to Starling Marte in the first.  In the bottom, Francisco Lindor doubled, got moved over on a bunt, and was brought in on a sacrifice to make it 2-1.

Then the wheels came off for Bieber in the second.  The Pirates were teeing off on his fastball.  It was 7-1 by the end of the inning and functionally the end of the game.  I missed most of it, but didnt feel bad about it.  The Indians were able to score a few runs later, but it was never close.  9-4 Pirates final.

The talk around Colorado Springs before the Chihuahuas and Skysox game was the weather.  There was a severe rain threat in the area.  However, the crowd did show up and came prepared.  The big Padres news was that their top prospect, Fernando Tatis jr. was out for the rest of the season with an injury.  The Chihuahuas were hoping hed advance to El Paso this year.  Meanwhile, Francisco Mejia would finally be starting tonight for the pups.

After the game started, Tim Hagerty was mentioning something about a hot tub in right field.  Some background noise distracted me at work and I couldnt hear him well.  Something about a fielder had once fallen into the hot tub trying to make a catch.  Youd think thered be a fence there in front of it.  Regardless, Jordan Lyles made another rehab start for the Chihuahuas.  Unfortunately, it ended up about the same as last time (7-19-18).  The Skysox batted around and scored six runs in the first.

In the third, there was a light rain falling, which got heavier.  Hundreds of umbrellas deployed in the crowd.  There was some lightning in the distance and thunder could be heard at the park.  Rain was expected for the next two days, so the umps and the teams really wanted to get this game in.  By the fourth thankfully, the rain lightened up and ceased to be a factor in the game.  Chihuahuas pitching also wasnt a factor.  Lyles came out after three, but the scoring didnt stop, as the score went to 9-0.

With the game out-of-hand, Tim chatted a bit about Sox the Fox, the Skysox mascot.  This was also when I learned of the Britton trade and nearly lost my dinner.  The Skysox rattled off seven consecutive singles in the fifth.  One of them was a fly ball that three fielders converged on, but never saw as it dropped between them.  The score was now 13-0.  I was sort of hoping for a rainout at this point.

In the sixth, Mejia singled and Shane Peterson brought him in.  I was watching Amourettie on Twitch by this point.  My last recorded highlight was in the eighth with Forrestt Allday making a great catch at the wall.  Hed missed a couple fly balls earlier.  13-1 Skysox was the final.  Mejia went 1 for 4 and let a couple of balls by catching.  They said he was getting over an injury, which was why he hadnt played the last couple of days.

So much for baseball tonight.  Elsewhere on Twitch, Livibee was playing the final mission of the Enslavers in Starcraft 1.  Shes a Starcraft 2 competitive grandmaster, but I couldnt help but chuckle as she lasted about as long as I ever did on that level.  This wasnt even her first attempt at this.  This is impossible, she muttered at one point.  I know just how you feel, Liv.

7-25-18

Day game today in Colorado Springs between the Chihuahuas and the Skysox.  Rain was in the forecast, but it held off for the afternoon.  There were lots of kids in crowd from various camps.  The Chihuahuas came out hitting.  Allen Craig doubled and drove in two runs in the first.  His ball seemed to carry in the outfield.  Tim Hagerty noted that the wind was blowing out hard.  He speculated this was going to be a high-scoring game.

In the second, Javy Guerra bunted with Auston Bousfield on second.  The pitcher misplayed it and Bousfield scored with Guerra safe at first.  Craig homered in the third to make it 4-0.  In the sixth, there was play at the plate on an Orlando Arcia double for the Skysox.  Francisco Mejia, catching today, didnt come up with the ball, but did throw out Arcia trying to take third.  4-1 Chihuahuas.

The seventh was eventful for the pups.  Forrestt Allday tripled.  Luis Urias got hit on the hand in his at bat afterward, but stayed in.  Allday scored on a Mejia sacrifice.  The fly ball went into a corner that Tim couldnt see and initially called it foul.  He was mortified to have missed the call and apologized repeatedly.  Craig then homered to bring in Urias.  Diego Goris then doubled in a run.  The Skysox manager pulled a double switch for the second time in the game when he went out for his pitcher.  It was 8-1 by the time the Skysox finally retired the side.

Craig got his fifth hit in the eighth.  He went 5 for 5 with two home runs.  I think the wind was blowing out harder for him than the other players.  The pups got a cheap run in the inning off of a dropped fly ball.  By the ninth, the crowd noise had died down considerably as the kids had to leave.  With the two double switches, there were also a bunch of position changes for the Skysox.  One outfielder played all three positions.  Tim joked that AL affiliate games are a lot easier to score and then immediately apologized for saying so.  9-1 Chihuahuas was the final.  Walter Lockett and Chihuahuas relief pitching had a good day for the team under hitter-friendly conditions.  Thats it for baseball today for me.  There wasnt anything on at night.

7-26-18

The MLB.TV free game was the Rangers versus the As . . . on audio.  When Im missing seeing Rangers games, I really get tired of the local blackout.  I will say its nice to hear a clear radio broadcast of a Rangers game, instead of the usual static-y signal I get at home.  The top of the first was eventful with two runs off two weak hits, a hit batter, and two errors.  Joey Gallo got the final out by throwing out a runner at home.  In the bottom, there was some more nervous play as the Rangers loaded the bases on an error.  Adrian Beltre and Gallo drove in a couple of runs to tie it.

Away from my desk at work, I brought up the Chihuahuas game . . . or not.  They were in a delay.  That would later lead to a tweet on their official site, Mother Nature 1, Baseball game 0.  Wet grounds were the listed cause.

Fear not, we have Flying Squirrels baseball in the meantime.  (I could probably find another minor league baseball team to listen to with a little effort, but what the heck.)  The first thing I heard them say was that Cole Hamels had been traded by the Rangers to the Cubs.  I put the Rangers game on pause, so Id be able to listen to their take on it later.  Back to the game, the Squirrels announcer made an impressive, booming home run call.  Turns out, he was holding the note, because he wasnt sure if the outfielder was going to rob it at the wall.

Thanks to that home run, the Squirrels had a two run lead going into the ninth.  With one on, they turned a double play.  The Squirrels are on the doorstep of victory, the announcer said.  And they did win 3-1 over the Reading Fightin Phils.  Sorry I didnt get the announcers name.  I barely got their opponents name.

I may have been an hour behind when I unpaused the Rangers game.  The As homered in the second to make it 3-2.  In the bottom, Ronald Guzman faced As pitcher Trevor Cahill, or as Eric Nadel said, Its the Condor versus the Trevor-dactyl, referring to their nicknames.  Guzman got on and Shin-Soo Choo drove him to tie it again.

In the fourth, the As scored three to make it 6-3.  And . . . I saw the score in the ninth and skipped ahead.  Jurickson Profar tripled in two runs in the fifth.  The As scored another run in the eighth and Guzman scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-6 going into the final inning.  Beltre singled and came out for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who then took second on a passed ball.  Three unproductive outs later, it was over, 7-6 AsRobinson Chirinos last out was a heartbreaking liner that should have dropped in, but was caught.  With a four-game sweep, the As are in contention for a wild card spot.

Actually the reason why I skipped ahead was so I could listen to the Extra Innings show on their Dallas flagship after the game.  They mention it at the end of every game, but Ive only ever heard it once.  Tonight, they had plenty to talk about with the Cole Hamels trade.  The details havent been finalized, but it looks like the Rangers didnt get much, but Hamels isnt that great at the moment.  In the recent past, its been the Rangers in contention and getting the screwed over by the Cubs for their veteran pitching.  A fan did call in and say his son got Hamels autograph at an event and Cole was very nice to him, so thats great to hear.
