Baseball Journal August 2025 Part 7

8-25-25

It was a bonus day of free baseball on MLB.TV and the food parade continues.    The Braves were at the Marlins and the Miami broadcasters were delivered a plate of chips and salsa and an incredible looking pizza.  It was a personal pizza with a big, fluffy crust, slices of melted mozzarella, and big slices of pepperoni.    It looked so good.    It was a very quick game with the Marlins winning, 2-1.  The Braves did get a solo home run in the ninth.

Good news from the Red Sox at the Orioles game.    Former Aggie star, Kyle Bradish, is about to come back to the O’s.    Hopefully, he returns to form quickly.    It was a 4-3 Red Sox win thanks to a three-run homer.    Aroldis Chapman shut the door in the ninth.

Ooh, it was not a good crowd in St. Louis tonight for the Cardinals’ game against the Pirates.    It looked like a nice night there, but the team has again been a disappointment this season.    I was watching the Pirates’ coverage.    A Pirate fan caught a Bryan Reynolds’ home run ball.    Their cameras kept showing him.    He was calling everybody he knew after the catch.    Their cute field reporter talked to him later.

The Pirates had the lead, but the Cards had a five-run fifth inning to tie it.    The Pirates loaded the bases in seventh with no outs.    Former Aggie star, Nick Gonzales sac’d in a run, but that was all, 6-5 Cards.    In the bottom of the seventh, Willson Contreras struck out.    The final strike was a good call, but Contreras was angry about something and walked away but kept talking.    The ump finally tossed him and Contreras had to be restrained.    He threw his helmet, his bat, and a bucket in the dugout out on the field.  The manager was tossed, but too late to save him.  This will result in a suspension for Contreras.

The Pirates left two on in the eighth, as Andrew McCutchen grounded into a double play.    In the ninth, Pirate Liover Peguero was hit by a 97mph pitch and hurting, but managed to steal second.    Ronny Simon drove him in to tie it, but made a baserunning mistake that ended the frame.    In the bottom with two outs, Alec Burelson hit a walk off home run to center.    7-6 Cards.    I like the Cardinals, but I have to support the Pirates with Nick playing for them.

Oops.    I was missing a big match up with the Phillies at the Mets.    I joined it in the fifth, tied at 3.    The Mets drove in a run to take the lead, 4-3.  I then got distracted by a more appealing game.    That’s just as well.  The Mets poured it on and won, 13-3.

The Tigers were at Sacramento and scoreless in the fourth with the A’s.    There was a quick flashback of the bottom of the third.    The PA had mistakenly flashed the home run lights on a foul ball.  The Detroit starter, Tarik Skubal, was annoyed and pointed at press box.    He struck out the final batter and then twirled his finger.  Let’s see the light show.

I vaguely remember another premature home run celebration that happened recently.    I even think it was a Chihuahuas game in Sacramento, but I can’t find any notes about it.    Maybe I’m wrong.    Regardless, it was good crowd there.    The fans are getting spoiled with non-stop baseball.

A’s starter, JT Ginn, was matching Skubal.    In the top of the sixth, Gleyber Torres led off with a home run to start the scoring.    This was followed by two more hits and a stolen base on a wild pitch.    Wenceel Perez drove them in after a pitching change to make it, 3-0 Tigers.

In the bottom of the sixth with a runner on third, Skubal was facing Jacob Wilson, whom I’ve seen playing the Aggies (5-14-22).    Wilson drove the runner in on a fielder’s choice, but Torres made a great play to get him at first, 3-1.    The Tigers left bases loaded in seventh.    In the bottom, the A’s lead off with a solo homer to make it, 3-2.

Skubal then loaded the bases with no outs.    He got two strikeouts, but gave up a grand slam to Shea Langeliers.    He knew it as soon as he threw it.    That was one batter too many.    Skubal came out with 99 pitches.    It was 6-3 A’s.    In the eighth, Nick Kurtz pinch hit and blasted a two-run homer.    The rookie is hitting a healthy .308 with a 1.038 OPS.    8-3 A’s was the final.

Another big matchup tonight was between the Padres and the Mariners.  The Padres had a big second with 4 runs, but M’s came back in the fifth with 5.    The Mariners won, 9-6.    After the Tigers’ loss, I wasn’t into this game.    The Rangers were shutout by the Angels, and the Yankees and the Dodgers also won big.    Pretty much everybody I’m rooting for lost tonight.    This was a bit of a disaster.

8-26-25

A big series started tonight between the Chihuahuas and the Rainiers in El Paso.    Tacoma is up by a half game on the pups for first place.    It started badly with the Rainiers scoring 5 runs in the second.

In the bottom of the third, the Chihuahuas came back and scored 2, including just missing a three-run homer.    Yonathan Perlaza then jacked out a three-run homer anyway to tie it at 5.    Rodolfo Duran added a two-run homer and chased the Rainiers’ starting pitcher.    The Chihuahuas scored 2 more in this 14-batter inning to make it, 9-5.

Odd play in the bottom of the fourth.    The Chihuahuas had a runner at third.    The Rainiers’ third pitcher gave up a shallow sac fly.    The outfielder dove for it, but still managed to throw out the runner going home for a double play.    But, we were all fooled.    The ball was caught on a bounce.    Since the runner had to wait, he couldn’t score on the shallow hit.

In the fifth, the Rainiers tied it with 4 runs.    The Chihuahuas had to bring in a new pitcher to end the inning.    In the seventh, the pups loaded the bases with two outs.    The Rainiers brought in a new pitcher and left them all stranded.    It started raining in El Paso.    Fans either left or left their seats for the concourse.    The infield was wet and players had trouble running on it.

In the eighth, the Rainers loaded bases with one out and brought in a run on a sac fly.    There was a play at the plate, but Tacoma took the lead, 10-9.    The Chihuahuas answered back in the bottom with an FC RBI, 10-10.    Unfortunately, the Chihuahuas didn’t score again, while the Rainiers scored 3 in the tenth and won, 13-10.    Tacoma took a game and a half lead in the standings.    This was the Chihuahuas’ longest game of the year at just over four hours.

The MLB.TV Free Game was a big matchup between the Padres and the Mariners.    The Padres scored 5 runs in top of the first.    Four of them came off grand slam by Ramon Laureano.    I was watching the Seattle coverage.    Eddie Vedder was in the booth for an interview.    The teams were playing for the Vedder Cup for charity.    I found out Vedder likes keeping a scorecard when watching a game.    (The woman in the booth is still trying to figure it out.)

The M’s loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs, but didn’t come away with any runs.    In the fifth, they did connect, as Randy Arozarena hit a two-run homer, 5-3.    I missed part of the game, but the Padres got the lead back for the ninth.    Closer Robert Suarez went through the heart of the M’s order for a 7-6 win.

8-27-25

The only game for me today was a noon game with the Chihuahuas and the Rainiers.    Rodolfo Duran was catching knuckleballer Matt Waldron for the first time.    They wanted Duran’s bat in the lineup, regardless of the potential catching liability.    However, Waldron didn’t have good stuff today.    He gave up a run in the first and then loaded the bases.    A single brought in 2 more runs to make it, 3-0 Rainiers.

In the bottom of the first, Yonathan Perlaza doubled.    Luis Campusano hit second base on a line drive.    The ball got away to bring in the runner, 3-1.    Waldron was out in the second and Wes Benjamin came in.    We had a few scoreless innings.

In the sixth, Duran hit a three-run homer to give the Chihuahuas the lead, 4-3.    Starting Duran paid off there.    In the seventh, broadcaster, Tim Hagerty, teased his producer.    He’s about to leave and various shows at KROD have said “Goodbye” to him on the air three times.    Tim was surprised he was working this game.

In the seventh, two Chihuahua doubles drove in a run to make it, 5-3.    They added another run in the eighth.    I was taking a nap at the time while listening and didn’t quite hear it.    Ron Marinaccio came in for the save in the ninth.    There was a muffed defensive play on the final out, but they got it for the win, 6-3.    The pups are back to being a half game back of Tacoma.    It was a tidy two-and-a-half hour game with over 5,000 in attendance for weekday day game.    This was a good win after yesterday’s disappointment.
