This article credits Colonel Tom Parker with keeping Elvis relevant while we was in the Army for two years. That's hard to argue. An older, more respectable Elvis was also going to be marketed more towards adults. If only he'd been directed towards taking more serious acting roles as a part of that.
When Elvis came back, Frank Sinatra hosted him on a TV special. The rest of the Rat Pack and Nancy Sinatra were also on the show.
Nancy Sinatra and Elvis didn't date, which is surprising, but maybe not, given who her father was (and suspected mob ties). They were friends. Frank didn't think much of Rock and Roll and presumably Elvis, but Nancy talked him into the the TV special. The King and the Chairman did become friends afterward.
