The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 8

This is a short, but text dense post.  (Sorry.  The subjects on the pages don't always break neatly.)  The first is about Elvis' privacy problems.

Another weird pasting of Elvis on a cartoon.

These are two pictures of the same page.  The woman is a songwriter who hung out with Elvis.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 7

Some great pictures to start out with here.

"Fraulein is Fraud," references a blonde, so the press hadn't noticed Priscilla yet, or he hadn't yet met her.  Below that article, Elvis was up for a musical version of Billy the Kid.  Much like the possibility of him playing Lil' Abner on Broadway, I think he dodged a bullet playing Billy (that might be a pun).  Still, acting in front of a live audience would have helped his acting skills, though like most of his movies, Elvis still would have been breaking into song for the whole production.

Here's Elvis dating Yvonne Lime, his co-star in Loving You, and showing her Graceland.  She seemed to be into him.

Here's Elvis' blonde German girlfriend.

Here's a longer article about Elvis and the girls in Germany.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 6

During a furlough, Elvis met with fans at the gates of the Graceland.  And today, people who stream on Twitch for a couple of thousand people live in seclusion in fear of their fans finding them.  (And not without good reason.)

Elvis "plans to sleep 'till noon," upon his return from the Army.  After a couple of years of waking up at 5:00am, he wanted to get back to old schedule, which usually involved him staying up 'till 3:00am.

Elvis as a member of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band, but incognito?  I wonder what the story is behind that drawing.

Can you believe Rock and Roll was in decline in the early 60's?  It was.  Be grateful for the Beatles.

I admit I don't get the cartoon here.

The girl there is listening to a portable vinyl record player.  I never knew such things existed.  Also, Elvis takes in a cabaret show in Paris, presumably not La Cage aux Folles.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 5

This article credits Colonel Tom Parker with keeping Elvis relevant while we was in the Army for two years.  That's hard to argue.  An older, more respectable Elvis was also going to be marketed more towards adults.  If only he'd been directed towards taking more serious acting roles as a part of that.

When Elvis came back, Frank Sinatra hosted him on a TV special.  The rest of the Rat Pack and Nancy Sinatra were also on the show.

Nancy Sinatra and Elvis didn't date, which is surprising, but maybe not, given who her father was (and suspected mob ties).  They were friends.  Frank didn't think much of Rock and Roll and presumably Elvis, but Nancy talked him into the the TV special.  The King and the Chairman did become friends afterward.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 4

Here's a dashing Elvis in uniform meeting some actual princesses.

Elvis lost his mom shortly after entering the military.  He took it very hard.  Some say this was what led to his indulgences later in life.

Here's an interview with Dolores Hart, one of Elvis' co-stars in two of his films.  Unlike several of his other co-stars, they did not have a romance.  Probably not coincidentally, she became a nun in the early 60's.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 3

Here's an extensive article (at least in terms of pictures) of Elvis entering the Army.  I'm getting a headache remembering how much trouble this was to scan and then put in order.  Please enjoy.

I like that where he's mugging for the camera in the bottom right.  Elvis was a model soldier.  He got some razzing from a few comrades, but as soon as they figured out he was just there to do his hitch like they were, he fit in.  It didn't hurt that he was able to buy things for the guys in his squad on occasion.

The Elvis Collection: Army Scrapbook 2

This was the beginning of my scanning troubles with this scrapbook before I went back and took pictures of it.  I'm not sure what this article is being held together with, but it was really fragile.

Mom had Elvis' military movements tracked on a calendar.  I'm intrigued by that little article on the left.  There's part of an article talking about the Brooklyn baseball club (the Dodgers).  In the center, there's an article about the British "Elvis."  I've never heard of him either.

Elvis kisses some waitresses in an Arkansas diner on his way to Fort Chaffee.  Maybe this was what mom was tracking, since she was living in Arkansas.

That 16 Magazine cover is terrifying.
