Sketch Dump: The Pony Book 21

This is final post for this sketchbook and, finally, we reveal why it's called "The Pony Book."  First is another sketch of Pernille Orum's Cowgirl.  It's the same image, but flopped and expanded.  This turned out well, because Pernille's painting is awesome.   

At Zia Comics, they have a lot of statues of comic and anime characters.  I fell in love with this My Little Pony inspired statue they have in a glass case.  This is Applejack.  It wasn't that big, but I had no room for it, also it was over $100.  (It's also been sold since I saw it.)  

I found images of it and other statues in the line and set about sketching them.  I showed a picture of the statue to a co-worker and then my sketch, which I was pleased with.  (The little horse actually took  me longer to draw than the girl.  Really.)  It was just a pencil sketch, because I wasn't confident about inking over it.  She urged me to ink and color it anyway.  She was right.  It turned out okay.

This led me to doing some of the other characters.  This is Princess Celestia.  

This is Rainbow Dash.  I liked doing the shoes.  (The pony, again, was impossible for me.)

Lastly, here's Sunset Shimmer.  (The pony turned out a little better.)

Sketch Dump: The Asia Notebook 16: Imagine FX

The first drawing here is bittersweet.  It's Pernille Orum cover from Imagine FX.  I feel bad I didn't buy it, especially since it included a poster of it, but I just couldn't justify paying the price.  Frankly, this is one of my best drawings, and I attribute that to the source material.  Unfortunately, as I look at this a few months later, the head looks a little out of proportion with the body, thus ruining all of my good feelings about it. 

The rest of these sketches are from the issue of Imagine FX that I did buy, which was ironically more expensive.  (But had plenty of content that I was interested in drawing, while the other one just had basically that one painting.)  This image was a succubus, but I changed it to be Red Sonja.  Yeah, maybe I should have put her in the chainmail bikini, but I didn't think of it before I colored it black.

 

This waitress character was really cute and inspiring.  Oddly, the pencil sketch is of a full color painting, and the color sketch is of a black and white sketch.  The pencil sketch turned out nice; I was afraid to ink it.

Lastly, here's a skater girl.  The legs are out of proportion, which is too bad, because the rest of it is nice.

 

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 18: Rose and Sabrina

These first three pages are sketches from a comic called Rose.  I bought the comic at a convention and it was signed by the author.     

The four sketches on the left are from Rose.  The two on the right are from something else.  The one at the top might be a co-worker.  Shortly after this page, I started labeling my sketches.

  

I like the Rose sketch on the right.  The simple sketch of the model on the left helped.  It's not that great, but doing a decent figure drawing sketch gave me some confidence.    

That's a Pernille Orum sketch on the lower right.  The other sketches are of Sabrina from this trade paperback.  I really liked the artwork in it.

I did a terrible job on drawing Salem the cat.  Adding him was a last minute afterthought and it shows.

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 15: Various Pernille Girls

Here's the last of my sketches from Pernille's art book.  

This first one is from something called Yoga Hosers.  I don't know anything about it.

 

This was an ambitious sketch.  Like many of my full body sketches, I tend to run out of room on the page.  So, this one is badly out of proportion.  

I like this one.  I keep noticing my reluctance to ink the sketches that I like.

Oooh, these are f***ed up.  The one on the left isn't supposed to be a midget.  That's Buffy on the right, but very poorly.  The worst of it is how much time I spent on it.  Those tiger stripes took forever to ink and color.

 

I think that's Alicia Silverstone from Clueless.  I like it.  I did a decent job on the plaid jacket.  

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 14: Mermaids

In spite of certain predilections of mine, I'm not the biggest mermaid fan.  Pernille sure is.  There's a whole chapter of them in her art book.

Given Pernille's love of Disney, I was surprised there was only one painting that looked like the Little Mermaid.

These two group shots were a bunch of effort.  

I didn't even think about inking this one.  It was too complex at the time for me.  I could maybe do it now.

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 13: More Pernille Girls

More Pernille art book sketches.

Here's the first of many Pernille mermaids.  This one came out reasonable.  What is that on the right?  A Medusa?  A witch?  Not too bad, but I like drawing pretty and cute girls.  

Ah, Grace Kelly.  There's pretty for you.  Unfortunately, I messed up the right arm.  I didn't realize the mistake until I'd inked it.  I probably should have tried the white out on it, though that might have made a worse mess.

  

This is a reasonable pencil sketch that I didn't destroy inking.  She's supposed to be black.  I draw black about as well as I draw Asian . . . unfortunately.  It's not intentional.

Pernille didn't identify the character here, but she may be Kida from Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire.  She also reminds me of Nadia from the anime Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water.  I'm not the first person to draw that comparison.  Anyway, I like this one.  

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 12: Pernille Girls

 These are various sketches from the Pernille Orum art book.

The one to right came out nice.  The head is too big on the one to the left.

The one on the right is Tippi Hedren from The Birds.

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 11: Nagel, Freckles, and a Beaver

The one on the left is another sketch I like of a Pernille painting.  On the left is a sketch of a Patrick Nagel painting.  There's another artist that features clean designs and a distinctive style.  I love his stuff.  

On the left is maybe a Cyberpunk 2077 sketch.  She's supposed to be Asian, but I've never figured out how to make a girl look Asian.  (Even today I was doing a drawing of a Chinese girl, you'd never know it looking at it.)  In the original, she was bathed in a greenish light.  Needless to say, I shouldn't have gone with that in my sketch.  I like the Pernille one on the right.  It turned out pretty well.  I dig freckles.

Anatomically incorrect, but stylish.

Okay, here's the beaver sketch.  I wish I knew what the story was behind Pernille's painting.

The sketch on the left is from a Korean art wallpaper.  

  

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 10: Frozen

There's just a couple of sketches from Frozen here.  I think the one of the left is of Anna.  (I don't know.  I haven't seen the movie, but then again Anna has red hair.)  The sketch on the right is one of my favorites done from the Pernille book.  I think this was also the first time I used my new Gelly Roll pen to ink.  They work really well.  They have a small, firm tip and the ink dries immediately without smudging.  

  

There's definitely Elsa on the right, obviously.

This one turned out bad, really bad.  It's an anatomical disaster. 

It's a rare nude from me.  I actually like drawing clothes and fashion, even if I'm bad at it.  I feel like I might get the most out of a fashion design class, rather than an art class.

There was a page with a series of hair sketches in the book with the same profile.  

Sketch Dump: The PO Notebook 9: Cowgirls

The centerpiece of Pernille's artbook was a painting she did for a magazine cover, probably ImagineFX.  This turned out to be one of my better sketches.  I held off on doing it until I had plenty of time and was in the right mood.  Here's a couple of pics of the pencil sketch.   

I liked the pencil version so much that I didn't ink and color it, but instead copied it.  The blue version is based the original coloring.  I did it again in yellow later.

There was another cowgirl painting in the book.  I later found online another Pernille cowgirl painting after finishing this sketchbook.  I'll try doing that one someday.
