Magazine Review: Back Issue Part 3

#47 Dave Stevens

This issue features a long interview with Rocketeer creator, Dave Stevens.  I haven’t actually read any of his Rocketeer stuff, but I love the movie, which there is also an article about.  I’ve also seen a documentary film about Stevens.  I was amazed by the breath of work he’d done: storyboards for the Thriller video and Raiders of the Lost Ark, a Michael Jordan Wheaties ad, designing the 80’s TV Flash costume, He-Man toy art, Star Wars promo art, and an awesome Jonny Quest comic cover (which I own).

Yes, it's real.

The focus on this issue was gun-toting adventurers.  There’s a long article on the Phantom in comics.  (I’d love to find a collection of his newspaper strips.)  Along with that are articles about Justice Inc., Dominic Fortune, Miracle Squad, and Man-God.  Yes, “Man-God.”  I’ll just let that lie there.

#59 Space Ghost

I’m up for anything about Space Ghost.  The article mostly focuses on Space Ghost comics.  It’s not comprehensive about the original animated series.  Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast is covered.  (I haven’t watched much of that and don’t really care to see more.)  Steve Rude is interviewed about his masterwork Space Ghost comic (which I own).  Some more recent comic versions are covered.

I had this issue.  I kind of miss it, but I'm not crying over it.  It's just the "CB Bears."  I watched the cartoon, but it didn't alter my life, like Robotech.

You have to admit, these are fun-looking covers.

Awesome Adam Kubert covers

Alex Toth model sheets for Jan and Jace

There’s an article and a whole checklist of Marvel’s short run of Hanna-Barbera comics.  I actually owned a couple of those.  Too bad that didn’t last longer.  (Steve Gerber actually worked on some of these.)  There was an odd mix of other articles: the Plastic Man newspaper strip, a history of the Marvel animation studio, and Marvel’s Dennis the Menace comics.  (I own some older Dennis comics from Fawcett, which are really good.)  I was interested in the Jonny Quest comics article.  I’d read several in the Comico run.  Finally, there’s an article on Starblazers comics.  It went over the continuity differences between the shows, movies, and different comic runs.
