The Elvis Collection: 50's Scrapbook 5

This time we have a long article mostly about Elvis' early TV appearances.

The Elvis Collection: 50's Scrapbook 4

Enough with this Elvis worship!  It's time to be skeptical.  Did Elvis ruin America's youth?  You could actually maybe make a case, but at least since the creation of mass media you could go back to other celebrities who started the corruption.  I don't think Elvis himself had any ill intent and probably not much in the way of conscious sex marketing.  I wonder why mom preserved this article, since I'm sure she didn't agree with it.

The Elvis Collection: 50's Scrapbook 3

I found this fascinating.  Given how crazy girls were for Elvis at the time, I can't believe they were running a contest for a date.

Here's an article mostly about Elvis' rise to stardom.

And here we are again, they had another date contest.  Elvis looks like he's licking the winner.  (I don't blame him.  She's cute.)

The Elvis Collection: 50's Scrapbook 2

We start with an article where Elvis answers letters from teens.

Interesting, dynamic picture.  I haven't seen this one anywhere else.

Sorry for the fold.  Elvis on the cover of Parade magazine.  Yeah, the same one you still get in your newspaper.  (If you're still getting a newspaper, I don't know why you're paying for propaganda.  You can get it for free anywhere.)

I don't know where this article comes from.  It's certainly from an enthusiastic fan.  That's an understatement in the extreme.  Frighteningly, she's probably typical of any given Elvis fan in the 50's.

Oh, this one's a goody.  Elvis is already over.  Pat Boone is the new king of pop.  Still, I saw Pat on TV a couple of days ago doing a commercial.  The guy certainly has had some longevity.

The Elvis Collection: 50's Scrapbook 1

My mom was a big Elvis fan.  My aunt mentioned that they'd watched him on his original appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show.  They were one of the few people in their small Arkansas town that had a TV.  Grandma was also a fan.

Mom also had a big Elvis collection that she started in the 50's.  Dad had put all of it in a Rubbermaid tub after moving it out of her original painted box.  The other day, I finally thought to take a look at what was inside.  I recognized some of the stuff I'd bought for her over the years, but at the bottom were the real treasures of her scrapbooks that she'd started as a teenager.  At last, I'd found something actually historical to post in this blog.  (Actually, I did an Elvis memorabilia post first in 2016.)

Scanning pages from these scrapbooks and loose newspaper articles is difficult for the formatting and the condition of the pages.  I'll do what I can, but there will be a bunch of apologies.

Here's a passionate picture to start with.

This is mostly an article about one of Elvis' co-stars, Dolores Hart.  It mentions her being right out of convent school.  She actually eventually quit Hollywood to become a nun.

The giant marquee standup from Love Me Tender.  (Sorry, cut off the bottom.  You're not missing anything.)

An article about Elvis' acting experiences in the movie, which was his first.  (The first page didn't fit in the scanner, so it's in two parts.)

Photo Bomb: Miscellaneous

Okay, I'm at the bottom of this batch of scanned photos.  I've got some maybe more interesting stuff coming up (if I can get it all scanned).

On the way to Missouri, my family went through Dallas and stopped on the outside of town at the Southfork Ranch.  The TV show was on at the time.  There are guided tours, but they're expense and I think we missed the one for the day.

I posted about one of my cousin's epic annual neighborhood Halloween Trick-or-Treating.  Here's a view of my uncle and niece handing out candy to the hoard.

Here's a couple more pics of my adorable nephews (and aunt).

Photo Bomb: Elephant Butte and Inn of the Mountain Gods

Here's a few pictures from around my lovely state of New Mexico.

This is the man-made lake of Elephant Butte created by the dam there.  It's one of the very few bodies of water in southern New Mexico.

The dock at Elephant Butte.  By the way, it's "B yout," not "Butt."

These are a couple of views of Inn of the Mountain Gods.  It's in equally scenic Ruidoso up in the mountains of southern New Mexico.
