Mike's Southwest Travels: The Bishop's Cap

Main Index

The Bishop's Cap

February 26, 2006

Location:  Outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico

These are just to give you an idea of what the surrounding area looks like.  Yeah, it's desolate, really desolate.

It looks small in the distance, but becomes very imposing close up.  There's a airport tower beacon on top.

My future vacation home.  I can't imagine someone building a house out here and then abandoning it, what with this tremendous view unspoiled by any scenic beauty.

The whole mountain is riddled with shafts.

Here's the trail.  There's a truck down in the ravine.

At last our objective, the Hebert Mine.  Quartz, Feldspar, and Fluorite await herein.

This baby is hewed from solid stone, no timber supports.  The shaft goes back about 50' deep.  There are two side tunnels about 30' deep.

Damn!  Still no orcs to fight.  I'm never going to make 2nd Level Magic-User.

One of the rattlesnakes in the area was kind enough to take my picture before attempting to bite me.  And with that, I beat a hasty retreat from the Bishop's Cap.
